Data compiled by the CDC confirms that all infected patients of this meningitis outbreak received steroid injections for back pain from July to September. Health officials believe that the steroids may have contained a dangerous fungus found in leaf mold. Fungal meningitis is not contagious and is developed when the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord become inflamed.
According to the CDC, the exact number of people that may have been affected by this outbreak is unknown at this time. Those infected suffered a variety of symptoms approximately 1 to 4 weeks after their injection, including headache, nausea, fever and a neurological deficit consistent with deep brain stroke.
