Know the Stats
Nursing homes and assisted living facilities are set up to take care of the elderly when they no longer have the ability to care for themselves. Those residing in these facilities are extremely vulnerable to abuse and neglect by staff members.
The National Council on Aging (NCOA) published a report that states nearly 1 in 10 Americans over the age of 60 has endured elderly abuse. The NCOA also estimates that 5 million seniors are abused every year across the United States. Even worse, statistics show that only 1 in 14 cases are reported to the police.
Abuse by the elderly at nursing homes or assisted living facilities may go unreported for a few reasons. The first being that the abuse victim is living in fear of their abuser and afraid to speak out because doing so could make their situation worse. They could also be embarrassed that this has happened to them and not want to relive these moments with anyone else. Secondly, the abuse victim may not be able to report their abuse or neglect because of their physical impairments. Sadly, half of all seniors with mental impairments such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia suffer from some type of abuse or neglect in their residence. It is very important for family members of those with disabilities that prevent them from reporting what is happening to them to be aware of what is going on and report any suspicions to local authorities. By keeping a close eye on your loved one’s facility, you can make sure your loved one does not suffer any harm.
These are The Warning Signs of Abuse or Neglect
- Physical abuse will present certain indicators that you can look for, such as broken bones, fractures, burn marks, bruises, and any other physical markings that make you suspect foul play.
- Neglect can show itself in various forms as well, such as bedsores, poor hygiene, unexplained weight loss, and various medical needs that are not being met on a daily basis.
- Your loved one could also suffer emotional abuse at the hands of the caretakers, which also presents some warning signs, like not wanting to participate in activities they once did, being withdrawn or depressed, and even tension or arguments between them and their caretaker.
- Financial abuse also occurs frequently in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. You can spot the warning signs for this by looking into your loved one’s finances and checking for any “lost” money or other valuable items from their possessions.
- Verbal abuse is another common type of abuse in a nursing home or assisted living facility environment. If your loved one has been threatened or belittled by their caretakers, then this absolutely a sign that abuse is occurring.
- Victim of a Crime – Battery or Assault, Theft, Exploitation of the Elderly, Sexual Assault or Rape by fellow resident or even staff.
