Brooksville Motorcycle License
Brooksville, FL Motorcycle License
Florida has the perfect climate for motorcyclists to enjoy pretty much year-round biking. In fact, according to the World Atlas, Florida takes the number 2 slot (California takes first place) for the most number of motorcycle registrations by state with 545,452. With so many bikers on the roads, it brings up the question of what it takes to obtain a motorcycle license in the great Sunshine State.
If you are looking into operating a motorcycle of any kind in the state of Florida, you must have what is called a motorcycle endorsement on your driver license or possess a “Motorcycle Only” license. It is also important to note that Florida law does not permit anyone under the age of 16 from obtaining a license to operate motorcycles.
How Do You Go About Getting a Motorcycle Endorsement in Florida?
You need to already have a valid Florida driver’s license, also known as a Class E license. Once this is done, you must take and pass a motorcycle cycle safety course, such as the Basic RiderCourse (BRC) or Basic RiderCourse updated (BRCu) with an approved Sponsor. You may be wondering how you go about finding a sponsor. Florida makes it relatively easy, and you can find one in your area.
After you successfully pass the course, you are required to get your motorcycle endorsement within one year. If you fail to obtain your endorsement within the year, then your successful completion will be considered void so you will have to take a Rider Skills Test (RST) with a Florida Rider Training Program coach before you can get your motorcycle endorsement.
Once you have finished up your BRC or BRCu, then you can proceed with obtaining your endorsement from your local driver’s license office. You will show proof of your course completion, and your ID, and pay the endorsement fees.
Once you have a motorcycle endorsement, it is good for life, meaning it will not expire.
How Do You Get Your “Motorcycle Only” Driver License in Florida?
No one under the age of 16 can get this type of license. If you are under the age of 18, the state of Florida requires that you have a Learner’s License for one year without any traffic judgments against you.
It is standard protocol to pass the same comprehension skills test that you take to get a Florida driver’s license. Then, you will need to take a BRC or BRCu with an approved Sponsor, just like you would for a motorcycle endorsement. Once this is completed, you can then head to the DMV to show your proof of course completion, and ID, and pay the required endorsement fees so that your “Motorcycle Only” license can be issued.

Florida has a great number of motorcycle riders on the roads, and our Spring Hill Motorcycle Accident Attorneys at Whittel & Melton are here to protect your rights as a rider. While riding a motorcycle requires a different skill set than a car, every driver must follow the same road laws.
We want to recommend that every rider wear a helmet and protective gear. A motorcycle rider who wears a helmet is five times more likely to not suffer a catastrophic head injury in the event of an accident. The state of Florida requires every rider under 21 to wear a helmet. For those over 21, you have the option to not wear a helmet as long as you carry a $10,000 medical insurance policy. Besides a helmet, riders can wear a face shield, protective eyewear, leather clothing, gloves, non-skid boots, and reflective tape or clothing to protect their bodies from injuries. Reflective tape or clothing just helps other drivers be able to see you better.
Everyone operating a vehicle, of any kind must obey traffic laws, which include following posted speed limits. We want to encourage you to ride defensively and never drink and ride. Stay educated on your riding techniques and hone in on your skills by taking advanced education courses.
