Drunk on NYE? AAA Offers Free Tows in Florida Through New Year’s
December 30, 2015
If you’ve had too much to drink on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day, AAA can help. The company offers free rides throughout Florida through its “Tow to Go” program. This service helps reduce impaired driving by providing a tow truck and a safe ride home for you and your vehicle. It is available until New Year’s Day.
“Tow to Go is a safety net, a last resort, for those without a plan while celebrating,” said program spokesman Matt Nasworthy.
The service is free and open to everyone, not just AAA members. However, rides depend on the availability of tow trucks and drivers. If you need assistance, a tow truck driver will take you and your vehicle to a safe location within 10 miles. The service is confidential.
AAA encourages everyone to plan ahead by arranging a designated driver or using a rideshare service. If you have no other option, “Tow to Go” is there to help.
The rides are intended as a last resort for people who do not have a safe way home. AAA recommends planning ahead and selecting a designated driver or using a cab before calling for a tow.

Since 1998, Florida has offered the program, providing over 24,000 rides to impaired drivers.
In 2012, Florida ranked third in the nation for DUI-related fatalities, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If you drive under the influence of alcohol and cause an accident, you can face severe criminal penalties and be responsible for all costs associated with the collision. Additionally, if someone dies as a result of the accident, you may be held liable in a wrongful death lawsuit, as well as facing criminal charges.
The average cost of a first-time DUI can range up to $10,000, including fines, legal defense, and auto insurance increases. If you will be out celebrating this New Year’s Eve, be smart and refrain from drinking and driving.
