Pasco Woman Killed in Golf Cart Accident
While most people believe that golf carts are not able to cause serious injuries or wrongful death, these motor vehicles are actually quite capable of causing catastrophic injuries just like cars, motorcycles, ATVs and trucks. While these accidents are uncommon, they are certainly not unheard of.
On June 16, a 27-year-old Land O’ Lakes woman was killed in a golf cart accident outside of the Lake Padgett East Bath and Racquet Club entrance.
The driver of the cart, a 28-year-old Land O’ Lakes man, made a left turn into the club causing the woman to be ejected from the passenger side of the golf cart.
She was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital for injuries and died shortly after.
Data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission shows that four in ten golf cart accidents involve a passenger being ejected from the cart. This type of accident is not uncommon due to the fact that most golf carts lack safety belts. In general, golf carts are not designed or engineered to maneuver turns safely at any speed. When a driver executes a quick turn, the forward momentum in combination with the absence of seat belts only increases the chances for a fatal ejection, especially for passengers.
Golf cart injuries and deaths are on the rise now that these vehicles are now used in more locations off of the golf course. In Florida alone more than 1,600 golf cart were reported in 2009. Golf cart fatalities can occur for a variety of reasons, from disobeying traffic laws to operating a cart in a reckless manner.
