An Orlando woman was killed early Monday morning on Interstate 75 in Pasco County after the sport utility vehicle she was driving overturned , according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The woman was riding north in a 2002 Suzuki SUV around 1 a.m. on I-75 about a mile north of State Road 54 when, for unknown reasons, the SUV veered onto the east shoulder of the highway and flipped and rolled multiple times.
The woman was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation into the cause of this tragedy is pending.
Due to the fact that SUVs are so much larger than other passenger vehicles, they tend to feel safer. However, because of their design, SUVs have a tendency to roll during a collision, often leading to serious injuries and even wrongful death. If you have recently lost a loved one or someone close to you in an SUV accident, you should speak with a Pasco County Wrongful Death Attorney at Whittel & Melton immediately.
SUV rollover accidents actually occur at an alarming rate across the United States. An estimated 11, 000 people die in SUV rollover accidents every year. One out of four vehicles on U.S. roads is an SUV. While these vehicles are quite popular, their high center of gravity makes them more prone to rollover if they are involved in an accident.
Additionally, many SUVs lack roll bar protection, so should a crash occur, the roof structures can collapse and cause serious injuries or death to the occupants inside the vehicle.
