Neighborhood Fight Ends with Car Accident, Two Injured Children and Several Arrests
Port Richey, Florida – The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office has arrested three men for their involvement in a Port Richey hit-and-run that left two children seriously injured Monday night.
According to reports, a 26-year-old man was attempting to drive away from three men that were beating him up when he lost control of his SUV and slammed into a group of people, including four children.
Two children suffered serious injuries, one with a possible broken back and the other with a compound fracture to his leg. The two were taken to local hospitals.
The 26-year-old driver was arrested and charged with DUI, driving on a suspended license and leaving the scene of an accident with injuries. According to police, the man has two warrants for failing to appear in court on previous DUI and driver’s license charges.
A Pasco sheriff’s spokesman claims the man was in the area to set up a date with a 14-year-old girl.
Two other men were arrested for simple battery. The pair allegedly assaulted the driver before he crashed his SUV.
Officials are still searching for the third man involved in the beating.
Police are still investigating the incident.
When a child is struck by a car, the injuries are usually quite serious or even fatal. Due to their low visibility, children are more likely to be the victims of a pedestrian accident than adults. It is estimated that nearly 50,000 children are hit by motor vehicles every year. Speeding, drunk driving and driver inattention are known factors that contribute to pedestrian accidents involving young children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a total of 1,314 children ages 0-14 were killed in pedestrian accidents in 2009. Of those deaths, 181 involved an intoxicated driver.
Your child can become involved in an accident with a negligent motorist or drunk driver in an instant.
