Hernando County Injury Attorney :: Pacifiers Recalled Due to Choking Hazard
January 31, 2014
Fred & Friends is recalling 200,000 pacifiers due to the risk that a baby using one could choke.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Thursday that young children should stop using the pacifiers immediately.
Currently, no injuries have been reported.
The CPSC recalled three different pacifiers. The first recall is the Chill Baby Artiste Pacifier that has an attached plastic mustache and beard, which can break off. The second, the Chill Baby Volume Control Pacifier, contains a volume knob that can detach. For this pacifier, the ventilation holes are smaller than federal regulators require. The last of the pacifiers recalled is the Chill Baby Panic Button Pacifier, which also has ventilation holes that are too small.
An estimated 183,000 pacifiers are being recalled in the U.S. and 17,000 in Canada. According to the CPSC, the pacifiers were sold in department stores, toy stores, hospital and museum gift shops, as well as other retailers from last April through December.
Consumers can return the pacifiers for a $12 refund by calling (855) 346-6372 or going online at fredandfriends.com.
Fred & Friends has received one report of the knob on the volume pacifier coming off.
The company recalled around 57,000 baby rattles last June that also posed a choking risk.
This is not the first time a company has recalled a pacifier for a choking hazard. Last week, Playtex recalled 1.4 million pacifier holders due to the risk of small children choking if a part of the clip broke off.
Product manufacturers, like Fred & Friends and Playtex, have a legal duty to make sure that their products are safe for use and will not seriously injure those that use them. While there are a plethora of baby products currently on the market, the sad reality is that many of these threaten the wellbeing of children who use or come into contact with them.
Companies that fail to ensure the safety of their products can be held liable when a consumer is injured.
