Four People Severely Injured in Brooksville Collision
July 12, 2012
Four people suffered serious injuries Monday as a result of a three-vehicle collision along Citrus Way.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol accident report, a 1995 Dodge Ram was traveling south along the county highway when it coasted into the northbound lane and hit a 2003 Jeep Liberty head on.
A third vehicle following the Dodge, a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, struck the left rear panel of the Dodge shortly after the first impact.
The driver of the Dodge, a 50-year-old Dunnellon man, was injured along with his passenger, a 44-year-old Brooksville man. They were both taken to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point.
The occupants inside the SUV, a 52-year-old woman and 56-year-old man of Brooksville, were also injured.
All four sustained “incapacitating injuries.”
According to troopers, the 58-year-old driver of the Chevrolet was not injured.
The driver of the Dodge was charged with driving in the wrong lane.
According to the report, a reflector post located along the shoulder of the road was damaged during the accident.

Wrong way accidents generally occur when a motorist crosses over the center line, turns onto the wrong off-ramp or on-ramp or turns down a one way street, typically resulting in a head-on collision. Driving the wrong way, especially on a high speed road is extremely dangerous. No matter how these accidents occur, those involved in head-on collisions can suffer life-changing injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, paralysis, spinal cord injuries and even wrongful death. Many wrong way accidents take place in Hernando County and across the country for the following reasons:
- Intoxicated drivers
- Distracted drivers
- Elderly drivers that cannot see well
- Drivers texting or talking on the phone
