Dangerous Spring Hill Intersection Cause for Concern | Spring Hill Car Accident Lawyers Whittel & Melton
April 1, 2022
There is a problem spot at the intersection of Linden and Coronado that Spring Hill residents claim is the culprit of more than two dozen accidents.
Speeding drivers running the stop sign has caused multiple cars to crash into yards and property of neighboring homes. A few weeks ago, a driver took out a nearby fence and smashed into a tree.
Residents believe that part of the problem is that the sun blocks the stop sign in the late afternoon hours. Speed is believed to be an issue at night.
Residents believe that the stop sign alone is not the answer for the problem of a high number of crashes – many feel that a traffic light would prove useful or even just additional signage warning drivers of there the road ends.
Nearby residents have reached out to Hernando County Public Works for help resolving the issue.
Our Spring Hill Car Crash Lawyers at Whittel & Melton want to help drivers practice a few defensive driving techniques that may prevent an accident when crossing an intersection. The following tips are just a few things you can do to keep yourself safe at intersections, like the one at Linden and Coronado in Spring Hill:
- Make sure you enter the intersection safely by checking that you are in the correct lane. Look for “blind spots” of other drivers and avoid them.
- When you approach a stop sign at an intersection, make sure and stop at the painted line or behind the curb.
- Drivers must take turns when they reach a stop sign, so before you proceed through the intersection you need to know who has the right of way. The right of way lies with whoever reached the intersection first. If you have any confusion about this, just allow the other driver to proceed first or look for them to signal you to go ahead and pull through.
- If another driver is in front of you at an intersection, wait about 2 seconds before you move up in case they suddenly stop.
- Do not run a stop sign, even if you don’t see anyone else there. You need to come to a stop for a full 2 seconds at a stop sign. Why? Because in a moving car, you can sometimes feel like you have stopped, but you really haven’t. If you stop for a full 2 seconds, then you can ensure that your vehicle did completely stop and avoid a crash or a ticket for rolling through a stop sign. Just stop and count “one thousand and one, one thousand and two,” and then proceed through the sign if all traffic is clear.
- When you are at an intersection and plan to turn, always signal so that other drivers know your intentions.
- Avoid any distractions at intersections, and when driving in general. Keep your music volume down, avoid eating or applying makeup, and definitely stay off your phone.
- When entering an intersection, keep one car length’s distance between you and the car in front of you. This is to ensure that if you happen to get rear-ended that you do not smash into the car in front of you.
- When you are waiting to proceed through an intersection, keep your wheel straight and your foot on the brake.
