October 3, 2012
A 16-month-old boy was hospitalized Tuesday after he nearly drowned in a swimming pool in the Sterling Hill community.
Paramedics from the Hernando County Fire Rescue and Spring Hill Fire Rescue responded to the Spring Hill home just before 5 p.m. and rushed the boy to Oak Hill Hospital.
As of now, no additional information regarding the boy’s condition is available.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 10 people across the U.S. die in drowning accidents every day. Of these deaths, every two are children under the age of 15. Sadly, unintentional drowning deaths particularly affect young children. In fact, unintentional drowning is the second leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1 and 14.
Near drowning accidents can result in serious injuries that may involve a lengthy recovery period or permanent disability. These types of accidents can be particularly difficult for a victim and a family to go through, especially when the person injured is a young child. Nearly drowning can lead to problems in the respiratory system as well as mild to severe brain damage due to being deprived of oxygen.
