More people than ever before are riding motorcycles nowadays and motorcycle riders embody almost every demographic group in the United States. The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control reported that the younger population is not the only demographic group that is dying in motorcycle crashes, in fact, more than half of motorcycle fatalities in 2008 involved the 40+ age groups, a 33 percent increase from 1998.

According to the medical journal American Surgeon, new research shows that riders over 40 face bigger risks in motorcycle accidents than younger riders because they bring along more “medical baggage” than a 21-year-old who has been in a comparable accident. According to a study from the National Trauma Databank, the risk for injury to riders over the age of 40 when involved in a collision is nearly double what it is for younger populations, with those aged 50 to 59 being the fastest growing group if injured bikers. Bikers over 40 are found to experience an increase in traumatic injuries, a longer stay in the hospital and even death when compared to riders under the age of 40 involved in wrecks. The risk of death in for those over 40 is one and a half to two times more likely and death from minor injuries is more prevalent due to complications such as heart attacks and infections.

While studies show that riders over 40 are at an increased risk if a collision occurs, this does not mean bikers have to park their rides and hang up their helmets permanently. Follow these road hog-riding tips so that you do not fall victim to road worriers in The Villages or any area in Lake, Marion or Sumter County:

1. Brush up on your skills and be a lifelong learner. According to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, age-related riding problems can be fixed by taking a riding class where a rider coach can quickly spot any foibles associated with your riding techniques.
2. Dress for success. Always wear the proper gear when thundering through the streets, and this does not just include a helmet. Always wear protective gear like riding gloves, jackets and protective pants.
3. Never drive under the influence of alcohol or prescription medicines that can inhibit your driving abilities. Certain medicines, such as some cold medicines, can screw up your reasonable ability to navigate the roads. Always talk to your doctor before you ride to ensure your reaction times won’t be flawed because of meds.

5. Do not tailgate other vehicles. Seeing is one thing, but your ability to have the time to react is another, so don’t risk it.
