“Riding along 41, 301 or even State Road 54 can present challenges to any biker, especially when motorists are careless about the most basic of driving. A simple blind left hand turn in Wesley Chapel or Zephyrhills can be a serious incident to anyone on a motorcycle. Unfortunately, motorcycle riders don’t get the benefit of a second chance when other drivers fail to pay attention. Our job is to see that our clients are properly compensated after such a harmful mistake.”
– Jason M. Melton, Esquire: Zephyrhills & Wesley Chapel, Florida Motorcycle Injury Attorney
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, novice riders are roughly 35 percent more likely to be involved in a motorcycle collision during their first year of owning a bike. In 2009 there were a total of 4,595 fatal crashes involving motorcycles across the United States that left 84,000 injured. Of the 96,000 bikers killed in 2008, 59 percent were not wearing helmets.
For the prevention of fatal injuries to bikers, helmets are estimated to be 37 percent effective to drivers and 41 percent effective for passengers. Of the biking public ages 15-20, 346 were killed and another 8,000 were injured in 2008. Of those fatally injured in 2008, only 35 percent were wearing helmets. For every 100 bikers killed in motorcycle accidents while not wearing helmets, an estimated 37 could have been saved if helmets had been worn by all 100.
If you are going to forego your four-wheeled whip for a motorcycle, follow these tips for new rider safety along the roads of Zephyrhills – Wesley Chapel and throughout the Pasco County area:
- 1.) Wear a full face helmet at all times. Make sure it fits you correctly and that you have it securely fastened before tooling down the street. If you are wearing a dark helmet, put some reflective tape.
- Wear gloves designed for motorcycle safety. Keep in mind that your hands are the first to hit the ground, followed by your face. Wear gloves even in the warm summer months because sweat can cause you to lose your grip on your bike.
- Wear bright, reflective clothing at night. Yellows, oranges and whites are best for visibility.
- Don’t learn to ride from your friends. You could pick up their bad habits, so it’s best to take a motorcycle safety course from professionals.
- Be aware of your surroundings. Always check your mirrors and avoid blind spots.
- Use your high beams during the day to increase your visibility.
- Make sure your kickstand is down before taking off on your bike. If the kickstand is not fully engaged, when you turn the kickstand could catch on the pavement and cause you and your bike to hit the ground.
- Place your feet on the ground whenever you stop your bike. If you do not do this you will fall.
