Johnson & Johnson Sunscreen Recall Lawyers Whittel & Melton
In July, Johnson & Johnson issued a voluntary recall of five Neutrogena and Aveeno aerosol sunscreen products they manufacture after they found benzene in some samples.
The recalled sunscreens include:
- Neutrogena Beach Defense
- Neutrogena Cool Dry Sport
- Neutrogena Invisible Daily
- Neutrogena Ultra Sheer
- Aveeno Protect + Refresh
Johnson & Johnson has issued statements telling customers to throw out any of these sunscreens and telling retailers to pull them from their shelves. The company also said that benzene is not an ingredient in their sunscreens, so they are looking into why it was present when tested. Benzene is a carcinogen that could cause cancer depending on the level and extent of exposure.
Why are Johnson & Johnson Sunscreens Being Recalled?
An online pharmacy called Valisure LLC recently conducted tests on 24 sunscreens and found high levels of benzene in these products. They then petitioned the FDA so that these products would be taken off retail shelves so that consumers could no longer purchase them. J&J issued a voluntary recall of their products in response to Valisure’s findings. Previous testing conducted by Valisure resulted in recalls of medications like Zantac and Metformin or Zantac.
Benzene is a cancer causing chemical used to make dyes, detergents, rubber, plastic, dyes, and other drugs that has been linked to blood cancers, such as leukemia. The American Cancer Society has listed benzene as one of the 20 most used chemicals in the U.S.
As we mentioned before, J&J insists that none of their aerosol sun protection sprays had benzene as an ingredient and they will conduct further investigations into how this contamination happened.
Symptoms of Benzene Exposure

- Dizziness
- Drowsiness

- Tremors
- Headaches
- Confusion
- Unconsciousness
- At very high levels of exposure to benzene, death can occur
