Exactech© Ankle, Hip, & Knee Replacements Recall

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall of numerous Exactech© knee and ankle replacements in August 2021 due to the potential for premature wear and tear in their polyethylene inserts, which could lead to health risks and possibly require corrective surgery. These knee and ankle arthroplasty inserts have been around since 2004 and have been used in over 140,000 ankle and knee replacement surgeries.

All inserts made after 2004 had issues with their vacuum-sealed packaging, making these devices susceptible to oxidation, and fast-tracking their shelf life.

Exactech© then expanded its recall to include various orthopedic hip-implant components due to similar issues with their previously recalled knee and ankle devices.

October 2022 – UPDATE

Exactech© has recalled about 200,000 ankle, hip, and knee prosthetics since the initial recall in August 2021.

In October, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation has decided to consolidate at least 75 lawsuits against Exactech© for those who have had recalled implants fail prematurely, resulting in revision surgery. The JPML assigned all lawsuits to U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis of the Brooklyn-based Eastern District of New York – where about one-third of lawsuits against Exactech© have been filed so far.
