Six people were airlifted to hospitals on Wednesday morning after a man suspected of DUI crashed into two cars stopped in the outside lane of I-75 in Wesley Chapel. The occupants of the two vehicles were attempting to change a flat tire.
One of the cars in the outside lane had a flat tire, and both cars had activated emergency flashers, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
A 47-year-old Wesley Chapel man was driving in the outside lane, but failed to maintain control of his vehicle as he attempted to change lanes. He crashed into the rearmost car, which then collided into the other car.
The pedestrians standing between and around the stopped vehicles were hit by the vehicles. A total of six people suffered injuries of varying degrees.
Three were taken by helicopter to Tampa General Hospital, and another three were flown to St. Joseph’s Hospital.
The Wesley Chapel man was arrested for felony DUI – serious bodily injury with a BAC of 0.10. He was also charged with driving while license suspended with knowledge, failing to drive in designated lane and a violation of business purposes only restrictions.
