Prevent Fourth of July Injuries this Holiday Weekend

July 3, 2014

The Fourth of July is meant to be celebrated with loved ones and friends, so don’t let a preventable accident land you in the emergency room this weekend. The most common accidents from Independence Day festivities arise from fun happenings and events, such as fireworks displays, backyard barbecues, pool parties and trips to the beach or lake.

The following injuries can easily be prevented this year, so take the time to review this list before the festivities begin.

1. Fireworks-Related Injuries

Fireworks on the Fourth of July are a huge tradition. However, you can seriously injure yourself and others if you do not use these explosives safely. Don’t let you or your party guests suffer injuries this Fourth of July. Remember that fireworks should only be used outside. A “dud” firework, or one that has already been lit, should never be reignited. Any used fireworks, including the “duds,” should be doused in water. Never drink alcohol and light fireworks off.

2. BBQ/Grill Disasters

Backyard cookouts are a staple for most Americans celebrating this holiday weekend. With that said, make sure you are grilling only outside and that you take the time to check your gas grill for leaks before using it. Always keep flammable items away from the grill, and store propane tanks in a cool location.

3. Boating Accidents

Boating accidents don’t need to happen at your gathering this Independence Day. Take the time to brush up on your boating skills by taking a safety course. Make sure that all children under 13 are wearing life jackets. Also, do not operate your boat under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

4. Driving/Boating Under the Influence

You do not want to spend your holiday weekend in a holding cell or hospital because of DUI-related injuries. Make sure no one in your group drinks and drives. Urge guests to have alternate transportation set in place before they start drinking.

5. Swimming Pool Accidents

Many Americans throw pool parties with friends and neighbors to celebrate the Fourth. Avoid slip, trip and fall accidents, accidental drowning’s and other pool-related mishaps by keeping your pool properly maintained. The most important tip regarding swimming pool accidents: ALWAYS have adult supervision when children are present.
