Crystal River Man Dies in Dunnellon Crash
A 59-year-old Crystal River man died last month after investigators believe his motorcycle slammed into a traffic sign in Dunnellon.
The crash occurred at 1:08 a.m. on County Road 488 and Diamond D. Lane in Dunnellon.
According to police, the man’s 53-year-old girlfriend called 911 to report that they had been involved in a motorcycle accident, and that she was unable to locate her boyfriend.
Once at the scene, deputies found the man unconscious and not alert. They began performing CPR until emergency crews arrived, but the man was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman was taken to Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center. No updates regarding her condition have been released.
Deputies believe that the motorcycle left the roadway and drove onto the shoulder, stopping after crashing into a traffic sign. Both the man and the woman were thrown from the motorcycle.
The investigation is pending.
Motorcycle accidents pose distinct risks to drivers and passengers that are not existent in other types of motor vehicle accidents. Because motorcycles offer limited protection to riders, these accidents generally involve interactions with human, vehicle and environmental factors that are not typically present in other automobile accidents. Due to these complexities, most motorcycle accidents are violent, leading to much more substantial injuries, many of which are fatal.
Nearly 80 percent of all motorcycle accidents result in injury or death to riders. There are numerous reasons why motorcycle accidents result in a high number of injuries and fatalities, including the following:
- Motorcycles do not provide riders with any protection from head or bodily injuries because they are not enclosed vehicles
- In many motorcycle accidents, riders are thrown from the bike resulting in significant injuries
- When a rider is ejected from a motorcycle in a crash, he or she will hit the ground and any objects in the area with a great deal of force
Motorcycle accidents often result in severe and catastrophic injuries, such as traumatic brain injuries, paralysis, injuries to the spinal cord, bruises, bone fractures, lacerations, disfigurement and even death.
